Science Alive Meets iCE AGE 8

Here is a cool experiment to try at home.
Ice Earrings Activity

Have fun making yourself some very cool ice earrings

What you will need:

  • A ruler
  • A piece of string that is 20 cm long
  • Two ice cubes
  • A tea towel
  • A tray
  • Instructions:

    • Place the middle of the string between the two ice cubes.
    • Wrap the two ice cubes and string up in the tea towel while keeping the string stuck firmly in between and press the ice cubes together for about a minute.
    • Unwrap the ice cubes and admire your handy work. Tie the string in a loop. You have completed your first ice cube earring! If you want to complete the set then try making another.
    • Now that you have your own ice earrings! Will you be tempted to wear them? I

Ice Science

The Balloon Experiment

We are learning to gather data just like real scientists.

To do this we have to used our senses to observe (look at) and touch, very carefully to see what happens to our ice balloons

Ice Science

We are learning to be 'ice' scientists.

We will know we can do this when we can:

o Gather Information about ice

o Observe (look carefully)

o Investigate (DO A FAIR TEST)

o Report our findings

We used 4 ice balloons. One was a control. To the others we added a teaspoon of salt, 4 drops of food colouring and 1 teaspoon of water.

We filled in science report sheets. We drew what we saw, and wrote what we observed.

Ben Forbes said, "The salt made the ice lumpy. The salt one melted the most. The teaspoon of water made the ice smooth. The food colouring went through the cracks and the ice went black."

Yazeed said," You can see through the ice. The salt makes it smaller at the end. The salt melted the most. It made it bumpier."

Keaton said, "The water got bigger. The control had not much water. The one with food colouring had a lot of red water. The one we added water to had a lot of water."
